Fascinating weather facts

Discover surprising things about our atmosphere, presented by Ciro and Nimbi.

❄️
Cirrus clouds form above 6,000 m altitude where temperatures drop below −40 °C. They are made entirely of ice crystals!
Ciro
🌡️
The highest temperature ever recorded in Romania was 44.5 °C in August 1951 (Ion Sion). The cold record is −38.5 °C in February 1942 (Bod, Brașov).

Wind speed is measured with an anemometer. The Beaufort scale (0–12) classifies wind from calm to hurricane. Force 12 means over 117 km/h!

A single thunderstorm can release energy equivalent to 10 nuclear bombs. All of it comes from the condensation of water vapour in the atmosphere.
Ciro
📡
Atmospheric pressure drops by about 12 hPa for every 100 m of altitude gain. That's why your ears pop in airplanes at 10,000 m altitude!
Ciro

Romania has one of Europe's most diverse climates - from the Black Sea coast to the Carpathian peaks, the temperature difference can exceed 20 °C on the same day!

🧩 Exercise - Temperature & Altitude
A weather station on a mountain at 1,500 m altitude records 8 °C. The temperature lapse rate is about 6.5 °C per 1,000 m. What temperature would you expect in the valley at 200 m altitude?
🎉 Correct! The altitude difference is 1,300 m × 6.5 °C/1,000 m ≈ 8.45 °C warmer in the valley. So 8 + 8.45 ≈ 16.5 °C. This is called the environmental lapse rate.
❌ Not quite. The valley is 1,300 m lower, so it's 1,300 × 6.5 / 1,000 ≈ 8.5 °C warmer → about 16–17 °C. Try the next one!
